So trying Songbird motivated me to set up my foobar to manage my music library. Turns out it was a lot simpler than I thought and only took a little futzing. So now my foobar is set up to everything I can think of wanting from a music player bar one thing (RIP Toaster). Clocking in at 100MB memory usage with the metadata from my entire library loaded into the playlist, less than half of Songbird and without the system and player lag I was having.

I've been watching Songbird for a looooong time hoping it would evolve into something akin to foobar2k but with better library support. This is my semi-annual "Can Songbird Handle My Music Collection And Still Be Responsive?" check. It's still in beta so it's failed all previous ones but it's been getting better every time. This is the first time it's gotten this far into the library importing without freezing so here's hoping.

http://getsongbird.com/

Best way to describe it is Firefox that also plays music. It's built around Firefox code which means it has support for add-ons to do all kinds of neat things.

EDIT: Well it's working for the first time ever. I'm liking it. It's taking up 560MB of RAM versus the 22MB my custom foobar takes so I definitely won't be using it all the time.

Sometimes the colors I see are breath-taking. Driving back from Charlotte...things that stick out.

Rich freshly tilled soil filled with red Carolina clay piled on brilliant green grass
Pink rain clouds as the sun filters through them in the afternoon
Yellow corona of the sun as it's setting behind some denser clouds
Speckled black of a freshly paved road

Glad I'm not completely color-blind.
I had a really good time this weekend. Started out pretty awful. Ended up taking 6.5 hours to get from Atlanta back to Charlotte and was exhausted once I got there. The next day was Thanksgiving which I spent with my great-aunt and uncle. My great-uncle has Parkinson's and Alzheimer's and isn't in that great of shape but he seemed worse physically but better mentally than last Thanksgiving. It was sad watching him lose track of what he was trying to say and not be able to function right but at least this time he could recognize that it was happening and make an effort to get past it. It has to be awful since he is an incredibly intelligent person and loved conversation more than most things.

After that it was all uphill. Spent the rest of the weekend with Courtney pretty much, playing Zack and Wiki and Mario Galaxy and just relaxing. I saw Court be more of a girl then I've probably ever seen her be before due to the combined cuteness of Mario Galaxy and Sanrio :D. Plans fell apart Friday and Saturday night but it was all good. Saturday I went up to Boone with Courtney's parents to eat lunch and afterwards played in an L5R tournament with some folks I'd met at another tournament the weekend before. I won and walked away with this and a bunch of booster packs. It was a shame we couldn't stay and chill with the folks up in Boone, they've got an awesome cadre up there and I'll definitely be trying to get back up there sometime. On Sunday we went to see American Gangster with Beth. Been too long since I've seen her, hopefully we'll be able to get together over Christmas break and catch up for real.

After that it was a rainy and dark drive back to Atlanta where I passed out and then started the work routine once more.

So the Securom protection on the Project Snowblind demo on Steam won't let me run the demo. Why the hell is it even there in the first place?

NOTE1: Securom is an anti-pirating utility supposed to detect fake discs.
NOTE2: Steam is a download service and as such there will never be a disc involved.

On a more positive note, Steam is finally living up to the potential I saw in it when they released it. Makes it easy to buy games (and download demos and view trailers) and it is all seamless. Incredibly convenient and cuts out the packaging costs for the distributor (which means all kind of indie games now have a home).

So I'm thinking about taking Aikido.

Also the schedule for ACL is out.

I'm conflicted in a couple places as evident here with code ACL1648807. It might make you register just to see stuff? I hope not because that would be dumb.
